Neither the pilot nor the passenger sustained any injuries and disembarked the aircraft in their own strength.

Overview

On 9 July 2022, the AAII was notified of an air accident of the Maule M-7-235 C aircraft at LKSTRZ. After the aircraft touched down, it bounced and a long landing run followed to which the pilot reacted by inadequate braking. As the aircraft pitched nose down, the propeller blades touched the ground and the aircraft turned over. Neither the pilot nor the passengers sustained any injuries and disembarked the aircraft in their own strength.

Factual Information

On 9 July 2022, the pilot flew the Maule M-7-235 C aircraft to carry out aerotows of gliders at LZHL. At 11:18, he took off for overflight to LKSTRZ in order to provide technical assistance to a non-powered glider from the base aeroclub Holíč, which landed at LKSTRZ due to unfavourable weather conditions.

Having arrived above LKSTRZ, the pilot made a pass in the direction of RWY 05, and after passing and determining the wind direction according to the wind sleeve, he joined the left circuit of RWY 05. The pilot began a landing manoeuvre at a speed of 80 kt in a configuration with small flaps set in position 1 at an angle of 24°. NW sidewind was blowing at a speed of 2–3 m·s-1. Before the first touchdown, the aircraft “floated” and then landed with a long landing run ended by pilot’s sharp braking. As a result, the aircraft pitched nose down, the propeller blades touched the ground and the aircraft turned over.

The pilot did not reach the fuel cock in the overturned aircraft, which he attributes to the shock suffered from the incident. It was the passenger who shut the fuel cock and then opened the window in his door and first left the aircraft. The pilot then used the same window as the passenger to disembark.

The pilot admits a poorly estimated distance from the touchdown point to the end of the runway, landing at a higher speed, and an overall inadequate reaction to the occurred situation as causes of the air accident.

Analysis

Having landed at LKSTRZ, following a long landing run, which the pilot was trying to shorten by braking, approximately 40 m in front of the runway end, the pilot started braking more intensively and after another 30 m, while the aircraft was moving at some 50 km·h-1, broke abruptly and pulled the stick back.

Prior to the event flight, nine flights were conducted at LZHL with no technical defects. The power unit stopped by the impact of the propeller on the ground.

The pilot was a valid flight crew licence holder with corresponding qualification and a valid medical certificate holder. The aircraft was maintained according to valid standards. The current weather conditions and the state of the runway at LKSTRZ had no effect on the emergence of the air accident. The assessed flight data from the flight data recorder corresponded to the data mentioned by the pilot in his statement.

Causes

The cause of the incident was a disproportionate braking manoeuvre during and at the end of the aircraft’s landing run following an incorrectly executed landing.
