Description:

Synopsis

On 27 March 2020, the AAII was notified of an air accident of the Extra EA 300L aircraft which carried out emergency landing with a damaged undercarriage at LKMT. The ERS staff performed an initial examination of the pilot and found him uninjured. The Police of the Czech Republic asked the pilot to take an orientation breath test with a negative result.

Factual Information

The pilot was performing flights at LKMT, including the practising of touch-and-go landing on RWY 22. The pilot incorrectly estimated landing parameters in the strong gust wind. Having first touched the runway, the aircraft bounced on touch-and-go landing at higher speed. Another rough touch with the runway followed after which the pilot continued taking off. The left undercarriage leg was deformed as a result of the impact. This fact was reported to TWR by the crew of the PA34, D-GLAO aircraft taxiing on TWY F towards TWY B. The affected aircraft pilot heard the information too. The pilot decided to burn out as much fuel as possible and then land. He was circling until the fuel was burnt out and then landed with FRS in full emergency. The deformed left undercarriage leg did not withstand the load and the left half of the wing touched the runway. The aircraft stopped approx. 150 m farther on the runway and 5–10 minutes later, the right undercarriage leg collapsed as well. The pilot remained uninjured. The aircraft sustained substantial damage.

Analyses

Information from the pilot’s testimony and official records of the Police of the Czech Republic was used in the investigation of the event. No device whose recordings could be used by the investigators in analysis of the critical stage of the event flight was installed in the aircraft. The aircraft pilot was practising flights at LKMT, including the practising of touch-and-go landing. The critical situation occurred during the touch-and-go landing manoeuvre, when the pilot failed to correctly perform a landing manoeuvre on RWY 22 in the strong gust wind as he responded to a wind gust too late. The analysis of the meteorological situation at the Ostrava/Mošnov aerodrome showed that the surface wind from the direction of 250° was blowing with gusts of 6–9 m.s-1. The contact of the left undercarriage leg with the runway was caused by the pilot’s effort to compensate for the lateral wind component with a left roll.

Conclusions

The cause of the air accident was an incorrect piloting technique during the touch-and-go landing practice which caused damage to the aircraft.

Safety Recommendations

AAII issues no safety recommendation.
